DID YOU KNOW?  -- Three years before the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide, Serbs torched Bosniak villages and killed at least 3,166 Bosniaks around Srebrenica. In 1993, the UN described the besieged situation in Srebrenica as a "slow-motion process of genocide." In July 1995, Serbs forcibly expelled 25,000 Bosniaks, brutally raped many women and girls, and systematically killed 8,000+ men and boys (DNA confirmed).

U.N. PILLAR OF SHAME IN BERLIN, GERMANY


Shoes are piled up to the monument "Pillar of Shame" in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, July 10, 2010, commemorating the Srebrenica genocide. The Society for Threatened Peoples has collected 16,744 shoes from Bosnia, Austria, Switzerland and Germany to build the monument that is to draw attention to the failure of the United Nation (UN) to prevent the killing of 8372 refugees who died during the Bosnian War in an area that was declared UN safe zone.

The Pillar of Shame serves as a metaphor for the immense betrayal of the United Nations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and as a warning to all future co-workers of the United Nations. The 16,744 shoes represent 8,372 Srebrenica genocide victims.
